1. 指定时序事件，相当于 earlier than sb /sth，意为”在…以前“，例如：

1.作状语

They knelt before the throne.

注意事项：

before常与long构成固定搭配： before long与long before。二者在意义上有实质差别：

（1）before long表示“不久之后”，相当于soon，其中before是介词，long是副词。例如：

Before long, a train inspector came to check out tickets. 不久之后，一名火车检票员来检票了。

（2）long before 有两种用法

①long before 后不接任何内容，在句中作状语，long和before均是副词，表示“很久之前”。例如：

I saw the film long before. 我很久以前就看过那部电影。

②long before 后接句子，其中 long是副词，before 是连词，表示“早在……之前”。例如：

The decision may have been made long before you were aware of it. 这个决定可能早在你意识到之前很久就已经确定了。
