rather than是连词吗

rather than是英语考试中经常考察的一个词组，用于表示两个或多个事物之间的选择或对比。有时候还会与would连用，只有熟练掌握这个词组的用法，才能在考试中少失分。

rather than是连词吗？

rather than是并列连词，基本意思是宁愿， 宁可， 更正确， 更合适。

rather than作并列连词的用法：

1、rather than 与would 连用时，构成“would rather...than...”句式，意思是“宁愿……而不愿……”，表示主观愿望，即在两者之中选择其一;当初要是……，会比……更好；与其……倒不如。

例如：

She'd rather die than lose the children. 

她宁愿死也不愿失去孩子们。

It would have been better to have thinned the trees over several winters rather than all at one time.

当初要是分几个冬天疏剪树木，会比一下子疏剪完效果好。

I would rather walk with God in the dark than go alone in the light.

与其在光明中独行倒不如在黑暗里与神共舞。

2、rather than 不与would连用时，表示客观事实，意为“是……而不是……；与其……不如……”。它连接的并列成分可以是名词、代词、形容词、介词(短语)、动名词、分句、不定式、动词等。

现分述如下：

（1）连接两个名词或代词：

They aim at quality rather than quantity.

他们的目的在于提高质量而不是增加数量

He is an explorer rather than a sailor.

与其说他是一个海员，不如说他是一个探险者。

Much of her work is speculative, based on psychoanalytic theoryrather than empirical data.

她的著作中有相当一部分内容是推测性的，建立在精神分析理论之上而缺乏来自实际经验的数据。

注意：rather than 连接两个名词或代词作主语时，谓语动词应与rather than 前面的名词或代词在人称和数上保持一致。

（2）连接两个形容词、副词：

Much of the food pleases rather than excites.

这些食物中许多只是让人满意，但并不让人兴奋。

The sweater she bought was beautiful rather than cheap. 

与其说她买的这件羊毛衫便宜不如说它漂亮。

The ship sank quickly rather than slowly.

船沉得很快，而不是很慢。

（3）连接两个介词(短语)或动词－ing形式、过去分词：

I'd prefer to read in the library rather than at home.

我宁愿在图书馆看书，也不愿在家里看书。

I'd prefer to do it in this way rather than in that way.

我喜欢这样做，而不愿意那样做。

He went to the park in the evening rather than in the morning.

他喜欢晚上去公园，而不喜欢早上去。

She enjoys singing rather than dancing. 

她喜欢唱歌，而不喜欢跳舞。

（4）连接两个分句：

We should help him rather than he should help us.

是我们应该帮助他而不是他应该帮助我们。

Let's get it over with as soon as possible, rather than drag it out.

我们尽快把它完成吧，不要再拖了。

（5）连接两个不定式：

I decided to write rather than (to) telephone. 

我决定写信而不打电话。

注意：rather than后接不定式时，不定式可以带to，也可以不带to。但rather than位于句首时，则只能接不带to的不定式。

如：

Rather than allow the vegetables to go bad, he sold them at half price. 

他唯恐蔬菜烂掉，把它们以半价卖掉了。

（6）连接两个动词：

Rather than have the radio repaired,he'd like to buy a new one.

与其修理那部收音机，他想还不如买一部新的。

She left rather than stayed at home.

她不是呆在家里，而是走了。

He ran rather than walked. 

他是跑来的，而不是走来的。

注意：这里rather than 后用了walked，而没有用walk，表示客观事实，而不是主观愿望。如果换成walk，则作“宁愿……而不愿 ……”解。

（7）后接what引导的名词性从句：

It was what he meant rather than what he said that annoyed me.

真正使我生气的不是他说的话而是他的意图。

rather than作介词短语时的用法：

1、后接名词。

It was a jest rather than a reproach.

这与其说是责备，还不如说是句玩笑呢。

Rather than a new car,he bought a color television.

他买了一台彩电，而没买新轿车。

2、后接动名词（由于此时rather than是介词词性，所以动词要加ing）。

We ought to check up,rather than just accepting what he says.

我们应该检查一下，而不是只接受他所说的话。

They wait for the group to decide rather than making individual decisions.

他们等待团体作决定而不是各自作出决定。

rather than作从属连词时的用法：

1、引导选择状语从句，一般翻译成“宁可......也不......”，从句多位于主句前。

如：

Rather than go there by air,I'd take the slowest train.

我宁愿坐最慢的火车，也不乘飞机去那里。

注意！当主句中有would，should时，也可将位于句末的rather than从句中的rather转移到主句中去。

如：

I'd rather take the slowest train than go there by air.

我宁愿做最慢的火车，也不乘飞机去那里。

2、引导比较状语从句，翻译成“与其......不如......”，一般多用“rather than that...”的结构，从句多位于主句后。

如：

I will help you rather than that you(should)have any trouble.

我会帮助你，不会让你遇到任何麻烦。

I should thank you rather than that you thank me.

与其你感谢我，还不如我感谢你。

（注意！从句中的谓语动词一般用虚拟语气，should可省略。）

rather than和instead of的区别：

rather than与 instead of 都有“而不是”的意思，有时可互换，但它们的用法不同。

1、instead of重点词在of上。它是个介词，所以Instead of后面接名词性结构。

例如：

We should encourage them instead of throwing cold water on them.

我们应该鼓励他们而不是对他们泼冷水。

throwing是动名词，而不能直接用throw。

He had the house rebuilt rather than repaired.

他宁愿重建房子，也不愿修缮。

2、rather than 接的是与前面相同的内容，要么名词要么短语要么从句。

例如：

He watched TV at home rather than went out last night .

rather than习题：

Rather than______ on a crowded bus, he always chooses to run to school.
